It seems like only a few years ago that me and my team of corrections officers were able to interact with all the inmates in our jail without incident. Then you add into the mix overcrowding, gangs, drugs, and weapons, and that mix becomes deadly. Many inmates trying to impress their gang brothers will often attack officers just to gain some credibility. The violence had reached a point where the staff in our prison knew something had to change now.
A call was made to Securus Technologies inquiring about their inmate call monitoring system, and they gladly showed us how things could change for the better soon after the installation. The company is based out of Dallas, Texas, and has already placed thousands of these same call systems in jails from coast to coast. Once we realized the company from CEO to employee all followed a single objective of making the world safer, we knew we were on to something.
The days of us having to manually listen to the inmates while they made their calls was over. Now the LBS software would do all that work for my officers while we put a heavier presence in the visitor center or doing cell inspections. Being able to put a stronger presence in those areas was like increasing our police force, and now we were finally in that position to be able to take back control and limit the violent episodes.
It wasn’t a week after the system was installed and we learned how to operate it that we got a huge hit. One inmate was discussing with his sister how she could sneak him prescription drugs at the visitor center without being caught. The day she arrived for a visit, we took her aside before she could ever see the inmate and retrieved a hug quantity of prescription drugs.
