Standing up for the rights of the people through organizations

When immigrants flee their countries to seek asylum in other countries, it is normally a very difficult time for them. The reason things become difficult for them is because of the journey they have to take and the hardships they have to undergo including mistreatment from others.

Some organizations have joined hands to focus on one mission which is standing up to defend the rights of these immigrants. Learn more about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey: http://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/potmsearch/detail/submission/6427427/Jim_Larkin

The Florence Project is a good example of organizations that have taken up the fight for justice. They stand to defend the immigrants who have been detained by the Homeland Security department.

These migrants usually come from poor backgrounds and are not able to afford advocates to assist them with their cases. Most of the immigrants have wrongfully been arrested and detained and their cases are usually strong and can be won with the proper representation. The Florence Project stands up for the human rights of the migrants and seeks to promote justice to every person.

Child trafficking is also a common scenario in various places. Other children make it to the border without being accompanied by their guardians. Whatever the case, if these children fall into the hands of the enforcers of the law, they are expected to appear before a court and to represent themselves as needed.

This is unfair when age is taken into consideration and this is why the Young Center has picked up an awareness campaign for these children. The Center is advocating for the improvement of immigration systems so that children are treated accordingly in the law courts when their proceedings are ongoing. Children require proper representation and fair treatment if they are served for any reason.

Advocators for the freedom of speech also exist in huge numbers. The Arizona based, American Civil Liberties Union works to speak out for the minority in the society. They led the fight towards the freedom of speech for the day laborers and have stood against the implementation of unconstitutional laws in Arizona. They encourage the inhabitants to always use the proper documentation when looking for jobs or schools so that they are not deported.

When Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin began the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, they were standing up for the immigrant rights. Having lived through an era when speaking the truth was considered unlawful, they understood the need to stand up for freedom of speech. During the time of their arrest, Sheriff Joe had been known to use unlawful ways to detain immigrants. This is what Jim and Michael wanted to fight against.

Using the settlement money they received from the Maricopa County, they funded others who stood up for the human and civil rights alongside freedom of speech. Since they began the Frontera Fund, their main aim has been to support the rights of the Hispanic Community through other organizations that share their sentiments.

As the fight for justice continues, the hope is that human and civil rights will be fostered and the community will become a better dwelling for people of all races.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin – Starting Something Grand for the Latino and Hispanic Community

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin had a pretty tough legal battle in clearing themselves from the hate administered upon them by Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio. The two were illegally arrested at their Phoenix homes in the middle of the night, unlawfully. The arrest was made after the two would publish an opposing article in Phoenix New Times about how the Maricopa County grand jury targets the writers, editors and the readers, of Phoenix New Times, with subpoenas. Lacey and Larkin are both writers and founders of New York Times and Phoenix New Times. The two writers and Joe Arpaio have had a pretty combative history. The two would consistently publicly attack Joe Arpaio on his discimatory actions towards Latinos and Hispanics during the fight on illegal immigration . The two would also publicly reveal the sheriff’s residential address. This action would be a supportive detail for their argument concerning where the sheriffs gets the money to afford the luxury of his home. The sheriff would take to this matter, but would respond too late to prosecute it. He would retaliate by issuing grand jury subpoenas on Phoenix New Times stories – within the last three years – regarding the many bashing content of the sheriff. He would also have investigated the browser history of both Lacey and Larkin in relation to research on such stories. Lacey and Larkin would report on this matter in Phoenix New Times, and later get arrested. A judge would call the Lacey and Larkin prosecution, “highly inappropriate”.

A public outcry on the arrest would be put into action and the two would get released within 24 hours. To settle the case, both Lacey and Larkin were awarded $3.7 million. With the settlement, they would start the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Foundation. This organization deals with the many unfair happening to the Latin and Hispanic community, as it relates to their human rights being violated. The organization provides grants to migrant-rights organization throughout Arizona.
